Cree Lighting AIA Presentation: Evolutions in Product Design and Metrics to More Reliably Manage Glare in the Outdoor Environment

It has been more than fifteen years since the lighting industry began transitioning away from legacy light sources and towards LED technology. This transition brought not only the promise of dramatic energy and maintenance savings, but also an opportunity for significantly improved optical control in luminaire design. However, this increased opportunity for control didn’t necessarily materialize into reduced complaints as it relates to glare. In this presentation, we’ll examine that evolution, and a few current strategies in system design, to address some of the causes and challenges as it relates to glare in the outdoor environment. We’ll also look at the B-U-G Rating system, exploring how it works and its potential use as a glare metric in today’s designs.
